Building a Capsule Wardrobe: Our Favorite Clothing Basics

Both of us love shopping and purchasing fun, trendy items, but have learned the importance of collecting basic items as well. These items can be mixed and matched to build many different outfits for any occasion. Between the two of us, we have tried everything, and here are our favorite versions of each closet essential!

Jeans

Jeans are one of the easiest ways to feel put together while still staying comfortable. They’re easy to dress up or down and can be worn for just about any occasion. Between the two of us, we’ve tried what feels like every denim brand out there. Our favorite overall is Citizens of Humanity for its comfort, quality, and range of flattering styles, but we also love Mother, Frame, Abercrombie, Zara, Levi’s, Still Here, La Ligne, and Veronica Beard. We are currently studying abroad, and jeans have become our daily uniform. We’ve slowly curated our denim collections, and these are some of our favorites.

Sweaters

A few simple sweaters go a long way. They can be thrown on with jeans, worn to lounge, or draped over your shoulders in the warmer months. We have found the value in investing in a few timeless sweaters that we can wear on repeat, making getting dressed each day easier.

Tees/tanks

A good white T-shirt is one of those wardrobe staples you reach for again and again. Our favorites, although a little pricey, are definitely worth it and are from Le Set and Buck Mason. Lately, we’ve also been loving the Hanes little boys tanks in a size large. They’re slightly sheer and lightweight, which makes them perfect for layering over workout sets, dressing up with a bralette, or throwing on for everyday wear.

Loafers

Loafers are timeless and we love how easy they are to slip on without overthinking it. Whether paired with jeans, trousers, shorts, or a dress, loafers are a classic we always come back to.

Sun glasses

Sunglasses don’t have to be expensive; the best sunglasses are the ones that fit YOU. Finding the right pair can take time; sunglasses fit everyone differently, but once you find a shape that feels natural and flattering, they become an everyday essential.

Outerwear

We live in black trench coats and blazers. They’re elegant and timeless, and the easiest thing to throw on. Whether we’re heading to dinner or layering one over any outfit for warmth, they are both closet staples for us.

Loungewear

A good loungewear set is perfect when you need something comfortable that still feels intentional. We tend to stick to neutral tones we can wear on repeat. We especially love matching sets because they’re endlessly versatile, easy to mix and match with other pieces, wear together, or style separately. H&M, Abercrombie, and Aerie are great for affordable options.
